Unusual in appearance as well as operation, the Whitworth was a breech-loader that fired an elongated 12-pound iron shell from a finely rifled 1,100 pound Model Shipways Barrel. Accurate and easy to maneuver, it had a range of 4.5 miles and made a shrill, whistling noise which could be distinguished from all other cannon of the period. Carronades were shorter and lighter than equivalent long guns. But, the advantage in weapon weight was offset by a much shorter range. Shot from a 32-pounder long gun traveled nearly a mile. Discharged from a 32-pounder carronade, the same shot traveled less than 1,000 yards.

The low muzzle velocity of the carronade s round shot inflicted a lot of damage, leading to its nickname, the masher. It could also be loaded with chain, hot shot, musket balls, or scrap metal, making it an effective weapon in naval warfare. It was capable of raking the deck of an enemy ship, setting it afire, or shredding its sails and rigging. Standard ammunition was occasionally supplemented by whatever scrap materials that were on hand, including bolts, chains, nails, even pieces of kettles.

The gun was mounted on a wooden carriage made of elm, which was both splinter resistant when hit by opposing gunfire and stout enough to withstand the shock of the recoiling gun. With unpredictable seas tossing both target and gun, accurate gunnery at a distance required an expert gunner, a well trained gun crew and a bit of luck. Used during the latter half of the war, it was able to carry patients in seated or prone positions.

Two litters (stretchers) on the floor of the wagon were divided by longitudinal hinged joints and could be bent at right angles to serve as bench seats. The upper platform halves, hinged to the sides of the wagon, dropped down to form the seat backs.

In the raised position, the seat backs were supported by iron posts hinged to their bottom surfaces. These posts fit into sockets in the floor. The resulting platform supported two more stretchers suspended from the roof. The space between the lower and the upper stretchers was ventilated by louver openings on each side of the body of the wagon.

The ambulance body rested on platform springs designed to reduce both fore-and-aft and side-to-side jostling. The suspension also included a horizontal draught spring under the fifth wheel to reduce the sudden lurch of the wagon when the team started to pull it. Though somewhat heavier than other ambulance designs at 1,120 pounds, the added weight improved stability.

Kit Features:

Historically accurate and perfectly scaled

Cleanly cast Britannia metal components

Laser-cut ply and basswood platform & chassis

Spoked wooden wheels with metal rims & axles

Realistic Red Cross decals

Canvas top

Clearly written illustrated instructions

Model length 8-1/2" / width 4" /height 6" / Scale 1:16

Difficulty Level: Intermediate Level

Design, prototype model and instructions by Ken Goldman

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1053/4381/1914/files/p43679b_af06f1df-30aa-42bf-9af7-84b05d5da8d1.jpg?v=1791534718
