Some of the “Medicines” had very colorful names and very audacious claims. Liniments and ointments were often concocted with some form of snake oil based upon Chinese ointments of the time that were known to be effective. Unfortunately, the American rattlesnake’s oil did not have the same potency of that of the Chinese water snake. Hence the rise of the term “Snake Oil Salesman”. The charlatans peddled their wares throughout the small towns of the west in their sometimes very colorful Medicine Wagons. It was decorated with numerous spikes to hold burning candles. Sometime in the 17th century, people started using the word to refer to not only the construction above the coffin, but to the vehicle that carried the casket to the grave. Early hearses were hand-drawn. As time went on, families started to choose rural cemeteries instead of traditional church grounds. Caskets had to be transported greater distances. People wanted to go out in style and ordered elaborately decorated coffins in exotic woods. The hearses became fancier and heavier. They needed horsepower, not manpower. The first American horse-drawn hearses date back to the mid nineteenth century. A typical horse-drawn hearse of that period cost about $1,500.

KIT FEATURES

Historically accurate, highly detailed model

Laser cut basswood parts

Basswood wheel rims & spokes

Cast Britannia metal axles & shafts

Machine turned aluminum wheel hubs

Photo-etched brass ornamentation

5 sheets of detailed plans

48-page illustrated instruction manual Instructions & prototype model by Ken Foran

MODEL SPECIFICATIONS

Length: 13” Height: 8” Width: 5” Scale: 1:12

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1053/4381/1914/files/Horse-drawn-hearse-model-kit-MG_1539-2_05f9ae81-5b9f-4af2-bc2e-e7a70a7c7c02.webp?v=1791534243
19th-century-doctors-buggy
19TH CENTURY DOCTOR'S BUGGY

BRIEF HISTORY

While some doctor's buggies were built with plain box-type bodies, many had a more elegant shape. Called phaeton types, they had a gracefully curving body and large wheels. Storage compartments below the seat held the physician's bag, medical instruments and supplies.

These buggies were lightly constructed for one occupant and drawn by a single horse. They were fast and could handle terrain that heavier wagons could not. Old-time doctors made house calls night or day, rain or snow. Most buggies had a folding leather top that could be raised in inclement weather.

Our model replicates a phaeton type buggy. The design is based on a drawing in an 1884 trade journal plus many contemporary photographs. We have not included a top, as it would be very difficult to model at this small scale.

We've designed our kit for historical accuracy and easy assembly. Fine basswood and cherry parts are laser cut to eliminate tedious sanding and shaping. Perfectly machined aluminum hubs, wooden spokes and rims replicate the wheels. Photo-etched brass and cleanly cast Britannia metal parts add life-like detail.
